One of the areas where a base SketchUp installation lacks a bit is in the animation functions. However, this extension, created by Fredo6, allows you to actually animate moving geometry. One of the most powerful extensions for SketchUp is flowify, which allows you to bend geometry based on a target shape with 4 corners. This allows for the creation of more complex shapes and objects by using a complex target shape.

Slicer allows you to take solid shapes and break them up into different slices, allowing you to make very interesting geometry, but also allows you to export these different slices to a CNC routing machine, helping you create real models from these shapes in real life. Note that shapes for slicer have to be solids, so you may want to use a tool like Solid Inspector to help you create the solid geometry. When you move the points on the bounding box, FFD will use those points to deform your shape.
Soap Skin and Bubble is an extension that allows you to select a frame, create a face along it, then inflate it to create different faces — this is an excellent extension for the creation of shapes like tensile structures, etc.
As we move forward, UV Mapping and the placement of materials is becoming more and more important. This extension allows you to really customize the location and mapping of your materials within your SketchUp models.

Need Help Fast?Home builders sometimes go a little crazy, creating gabled roofs with dozens of different pitches slopesdormers, eaves and other doodads that make modeling them in Google SketchUp a nightmare.
You can approach the construction of a gabled roof in Google SketchUp in a bunch of ways every SketchUp expert has her favoritebut one method in particular works well consistently. Use the Line tool to create an outline of the parts of your roof that will have eaves of the same height.
The goal is a single face that you can offset. A lot of buildings have complex roofs with eaves of all different heights; for the sake of this step, just create a face which, when offset, will create roof overhangs in the right places. Architects and builders often express angles as rise over run ratios. For example, a pronounced 4 in 12 roof slope rises 4 feet for every 12 feet it runs — a slope is very shallow, and a slope is very steep. Use the Line tool to draw a vertical edge from the midpoint of your roof to the angled guide you created in Step 2.
Draw two edges from the top of your vertical line to the corners of your roof. Its purpose is simple — you use Instant Roof to quickly create gables, hips, sheds and trellises anywhere you need them.
This script has everything going for it:. It's easy to install. Pop one file into your plugins folder and you're done. It's easy to learn. The in-product help is also comprehensive and well-placed. It's easy to use. Everything's right there in the Plugins menu, so you don't have to memorize and keep track of a bunch of little tool icons.
The input method for telling the script where to put gables and sheds couldn't be simpler. By default, the script produces an entirely hipped roof; it slopes in all directions. To produce a roof form with a gable, select an edge in addition to the face, then run the script:. Selecting edges on opposite sides of the building results in gables over both:. If you select three edges, you end up with a shed:.
The script handles increased complexity beautifully:. Instant Roof includes a number of roof styles, but they're all just preset combinations of parameters that you can fiddle with to produce almost anything you need. Slopes, eaves, fascia, rafters — they'e all infinitely adjustable. And if that's not enough, Instant Roof can also create a few different roof details: mission tile, shingles, standing seam and sheet metal. Instant Roof comes in two flavors: free and Pro.
The latter gives you the ability to choose from a much larger number of roof slopes; that's critical if you're using the script to do serious work. I can only imagine what impact Instant Roof will have on urban designers, art directors, set designers, concept artists and anyone else who needs to whip up convincing built form, quickly.
As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, this script's author has done a phenomenal job of creating tutorials that should answer all your questions. Here's a screenshot of what you can expect to find there:.
