Narrator: "Midsommar" is a horror movie about a Swedish festival gone very, very wrong. The film was written and directed by Ari Aster, the man behind 's "Hereditary. Here are all of the symbols and hidden references in the movie, and how they relate to its shocking ending.

First of all, while "Midsommar" quickly turns into a cultish nightmare, the movie is ultimately about the end of a relationship between the two main characters, Dani and Christian. Ari Aster was recovering from a breakup of his own while he was developing the film, and that experience influenced his writing of the characters, in particular Dani. He was also inspired by romantic films, like 's "Scenes From a Marriage" and 's "Modern Romance.

Robert: I don't think that we should go out anymore. Narrator: As for his horror influences, there's a clear reference to "The Shining" in this overhead shot of the journey. Early in the movie, the paintings on the walls of the apartments hint toward the ending of the film and the very messy breakup we witness.

In Christian's apartment, we see a painting by Brooklyn-based artist Mu Pan. The work is part of a series called "Dinoassholes," a title that seems very appropriate for Christian's character, given his callous treatment of Dani. Also visible is this work by Swedish artist John Bauer. It depicts a little girl in a crown facing a large bear. This painting directly alludes to the movie's ending, when Christian is placed inside a bear carcass and set on fire.

Dani watches him burn while wearing a crown of flowers. Later, in Siv's house, Christian also sees an image on the wall of a bear being burned alive, further foreshadowing his untimely death. Simon: So we're just going to ignore the bear then? Narrator: Aster compared the sacrificial burning of the temple to the burning of a box of an ex's personal items as a sort of catharsis post-breakup, only, of course, far more extreme. The sacrificial burning at the end also calls back the ending of "The Wicker Man," in which the outsider main character is placed in a wooden statue and set afire.

The Meaning Of The ‘Midsommar’ Murals, According To The Artists Who Created The Harga Commune

Aster and his team spent months researching Scandinavian and Germanic folklore and scattered Easter eggs throughout the film, which also hint at the culmination of Dani and Christian's relationship, major plot points, and other characters' deaths.

One of the most important set pieces, the bunkhouse, exemplifies this attention to detail. The inner walls are covered in elaborate murals painted by artist Ragnar Persson and based on medieval art. If you look closely, these images actually reveal much of the plot. Basically, the bunkhouse fulfills the same function as the dollhouse did in "Hereditary," illustrating much of the story before it actually happens. For example, above one of the beds we see an illustration of two people having sex, surrounded by onlookers.

This clearly refers to the mating ritual Christian is later lured into to impregnate Maja. This scene is also hinted at when the boys are eating earlier in the film and discussing all of the Swedish girls they plan on impregnating during the trip. Another illustration shows people cutting their hands as a sacrifice.

Midsommar plot, explained: what does it all mean?

Soon after, we see the old couple cut their palms atop the cliff, right before they jump to their deaths. Also covering the walls are many runes, an ancient language that features heavily throughout the film. At one point, the characters refer to the runes as Elder Futhark and Younger Futhark, two evolutions of the same system of language.

Looking at the meanings of some of these symbols, we can try to piece together why Aster chose them in certain parts of the movie. He assigned each character a rune, which we can see clearly on their robes. Dani has an R rune on her dress, which symbolizes a ride or a journey. This likely refers to her own journey of finally coming to terms with the truth about her relationship. The hourglass-shaped rune next it symbolizes day or an awakening.Audiences discovered symbols early on that, if you had only picked up on them, pointed you to the ending.

Now, with his follow-up Midsommarfans are doing the same. The film ends with Dani needing to select a ninth person for the pagan cult to sacrifice so it may be rewarded with nature's bounties. There's a lottery designed to make the selection, but Dani instead exercises her right to choose -- and she names Christian. He cheated on Dani with a cult member, and this is her revenge. Christian is placed inside the skin of a bear, and is then left, paralyzed, in a yellow wooden hut that's burned as part of the ritual sacrifice.

That's foreshadowed early on in a painting above Dani's bed in the United States that depicts a girl with a crown burning a bear. When we later spot a bear in what seems to be a hipster commune, you realize the creature is going to play a significant role. It's out of place in a peaceful society, and an automatic red flag. Given that Christian ignores Dani, and even forgets her birthday, it's easy to discern his fate is tied to the bear, especially as he's the only American fascinated with its cage.

Or what we thought was folklore: a tapestry depicting a story of seduction and fertility. There, a female suitor prays, and hexes the object of her affection by placing her pubic hair in the target's food and menstruating in the drink.

Throughout their stay, everyone is given a yellow juice, except for Christian, whose drink is darker. You can put two and two together, especially as a girl keeps eyeing Christian, and even places a love relic beneath his bed. It's an easy giveaway that she's going to seduce him, and you can pretty much wager he's going to cheat on Dani, and get caught. When he eats a pie and finds pubic hair, you know it's all over for Christian, especially as the other outsiders have started going missing.

The only question that remained was how Dani was going to get her retribution. Admittedly, it did feel like she would have fed him to the bear, rather than green-light a ritual in which he's sedated and burned alive in a bear skin. The film is in theaters now. Blue Flag Vol. Tokyo Ghoul :re, Vol.Ari Aster's new horror film Midsommar has an ending that's about as horrifying as you'd expect from the writer-director who made last year's Hereditary.

Looking for an escape, Dani follows her boyfriend Christian Jack Reynor on a trip with his friends to a folk festival in Sweden, run by a commune that Christian's friend Pelle Vilhelm Blomgren grew up in. However, things take a dark turn during the first ceremony, when two elders of the commune commit ritualistic suicide.

As Dani and Christian's friends begin disappearing one by one, it becomes clear that there's something very dark going on behind the scenes of the Midsommar festivities. In the final ceremony of the Midsommar festival, nine human sacrifices are made in the yellow pyramid-shaped temple that Dani was told not to enter.

The sacrifices are an offering of life in exchange for life, and every year the May Queen chooses the final and most important sacrifice. Dani chooses Christian to be sacrificed, and he is sewn into a bear skin and placed at the center of the temple. The life of each member of the community is divided into four seasons, each lasting 18 years. They return to the commune and work from ages 36 to 54 falland from ages 54 to 72 winter they lead the community as elders.

Those who don't die during the fall are killed afterwards by being struck repeatedly on the head with a large wooden mallet. The dead bodies are then cremated and the ashes are scattered around a sacred ancestral tree. As Midsommar moves towards its ending, all of Dani and Christian's friends have unbeknown to them been killed.

Maja hides a love rune under Christian's bed and bakes her pubic hair into a pie that he eats. During the May Queen celebrations, Christian is given a drink with hallucinogenic properties, and then flower petals are laid out to create a path for him to the barn where Maja is waiting.

Whomever is left standing last is declared that year's May Queen - and this Midsommar, that person is Dani.

All the hidden meanings you may have missed in the 'Midsommar' ending

She is given a flower crown and pride of place at the May Queen feast, and then taken to bless the harvest and animals. She peers through the door, sees Christian having sex with Maja, and begins crying hysterically. In Midsommar 's ending we see the final part of the festival's twisted traditions, as nine human sacrifices are offered up to the gods in exchange for nine new lives, in the form of babies conceived during the Midsommar celebrations.

By the end of the movie, four of the new blood sacrifices have already been made: British visitors Connie and Simon, and Christian's friends Josh and Mark. It's heavily implied that Pelle's own parents were sacrificed in their own time, as Pelle tells Dani that they burned in a fire when he was a child. Due to Christian's drugged-up state, the lungs appear to be breathing. Christian is caught and has a powder blown in his face that paralyzes him, rendering him unable to speak or move.

The bodies of the other sacrifices are also brought to the temple and placed around the walls.Last year I watched A24's Hereditary and it legitimately ruined my ability to get a good night's sleep for the following three weeks. Here's how A24 describes the film: "Dani and Christian are a young American couple with a relationship on the brink of falling apart. But after a family tragedy keeps them together, a grieving Dani invites herself to join Christian and his friends on a trip to a once-in-a-lifetime midsummer festival in a remote Swedish village.

What begins as a carefree summer holiday in a land of eternal sunlight takes a sinister turn when the insular villagers invite their guests to partake in festivities that render the pastoral paradise increasingly unnerving and viscerally disturbing.

When the room went dark and the trailers for It Chapter Two and The Lodge were shown, I fully accepted that there was a good chance I'd leave the theater horrified, and remain that way for the next several weeks. Anyway, eventually some other members of the community come smash this man's head with a mallet to put him out of his misery.

Tinkling on a Tree - Midsommar: Director's Cut

One cult member even pushes Christian's butt during the sex, like to help his thrust velocity, I guess? Looking back, it was really weird, but after all the strange shit that'd happened prior to it, at the time I was just like, "Is she giving him a sex thrust boost? OK, sure. After having sex with Maja, Christian runs off, stumbles upon some stuff he shouldn't see, and the cult uses some drug to paralyze him, but keep him alive. She chooses Christian, who is taken away, stuffed inside of a bear's carcass, placed in a temple, and burned alongside the others being sacrificed.

And that's how it ends! Did Christian deserve to be sacrificed?

Of course not. But as a viewer, it's tough to feel that bad for a character who sucked as a boyfriend and a friend the entire movie, so Can an easy scare handle this: Yes, it won't creep you out at night or stick with you for weeks. One of the first things the group does after arriving is take shrooms, which seems like a bad idea for Dani in particular given what she's been through in recent weeks.

Of course, she has a bad trip and some weird hallucinations of grass growing through her skin, her dead sister, and a person momentarily popping up in the mirror's reflection behind her before vanishing. It's all far more effective than any anti-drug ad I've ever seen. So, this place they're at is CLEARLY creepy and strange, but for some reason the group of friends is ignoring all of the weirdness until a couple of elders commit suicide, which is apparently a thing people in this cult, I mean, "community" do when they reach the age of Warning This image is graphic Tap to reveal Click to reveal.

And it means that much of the fun of Midsommar occurs in the days after you see it, where all you can truly do is sift over its insights and oddities. There, in a makeshift village co-opted by a quasi-religious sect very interested in ritual sacrifice and historic tradition, she experiences profound transformation as well as blinding terror. Like a number of well-made horror movies released today, Midsommar is a polarising watch, particularly as it clocks in at nearly three hours and features numerous moments of infuriating nothingness that often ends up building to little.

But it does get under your skin, primarily because of how obtuse and tricky it is. I n truth, Midsommar is more a story about toxic relationships than one about cults and odd rituals, with a young woman involved with a distant, non-communicative and increasingly disengaged man and how she finds catharsis and happiness in his gradual demise. She wants to be close to him. Her dilemma is that she is alone in the world.

Because he is not allowing her in. When, at the very end of the film, the Harga mirror her own wailing and crying, holding her and emulating her own grief, it finally allows her to heal. E very 90 years, the Harga participate in an elaborate celebration that involves two elderly members of the commune sacrificing their lives by leaping from a tall mountain.

Death, as they claim, is a blessing and a gift, with lives requiring to be given in order for the wider community to receive continued life in return. Namely that they have determined Christian to be the most sexually compatible male for one of their own. The Harga explain that their bloodlines are deliberately mapped and planned in order to prevent incest, and therefore require occasional outsiders to provide sperm and diversify the gene pool.

C hristian is ultimately captured via a love spell and has sex with a village girl to create a child. Dressed up as a bear, he is set alight in a Harga temple. D ani experiences nightmarish visions and extreme fluctuations in emotion throughout the film, but it is left unclear as to whether she has entered some kind of psychosis by the end.

Her early, drug-induced run through the woods does feel like a mental breakdown of a sort, but she also displays a level of rationality throughout the scenes that follow that indicates she is still lucid.

During the dance that determines the new May Queen, she appears exhausted and almost mesmerised by what she has lived through, but not to an extent where she has lost her mind. Despite the lack of concrete evidence, however, there is a growing theory that Dani was always destined to join the Harga.

The hope is that as you get to the final sequence, that the surprise is not necessarily in what happens but how it feels to [get] there. Apologies for the visual. At the end of Midsommar, the Harga explain that nine individuals must be sacrificed in order to bring the ceremony to a close: four from the community itself, four outsiders and one either selected by the May Queen or via lottery. This sacrifice took place every ninth year, and saw the demise of nine men over the course of nine days.

The number nine also appears repeatedly in Norse mythology and has been repeatedly linked to themes of magic and mystery throughout history.

B ecause of many of the aesthetic similarities between the rituals of the Hagar and the Paigon rituals depicted in Hereditaryspecifically in their mutual full-frontal nudity, religious runes and the graphic desecrations of the dead, some Midsommar viewers have theorised that both films are narratively linked.

This, as cool as it sounds, is not the case.Over two stories tall, the paintings portray images bucolic and bizarre, from young women in flower crowns dancing about a maypole to a bear burning in flames. Everything in the worlds created by filmmaker Ari Aster and his collaborators seem to have meaning, so what's up with the strange paintings in Midsommar?

Mild spoilers ahead. Aster and production designer Henrik Svensson did a great deal of research to design and build the village, which was physically erected outside Budapest for filming. The murals like the ones you see in the film have a long history. But Svensson says the real murals they studied were mainly painted to increase the towns' bragging rights. While the Midsommar murals depict women performing love spells using their own pubic hair and menstrual blood, the scenes in the historical artwork are "sometimes biblical, sometimes just party scenes," the production designer explains.

Why capitalism is wrong. Basic stuff No cultural history is better than another That might explain why Persson was the artist chosen to interpret the original murals. The night. But there's much more to the murals and the overall look of the film than just foreshadowing. They also have a sociopolitical meaning. Svensson explains that, for him, Midsommar is a "very anti-nationalistic film" and every typical Swedish element a negative omen. That insularity and the insidiousness of it plays against his vision for the set in general.

It's exactly that tension between the sun on the surface and darkness just beneath that makes Midsommar so deeply disturbing. You need the latest version of Adobe Flash Player to view this video.
