How To Choose Replacement Tuners For My Guitar?
Sold by Amazon Warehouse. Fulfilled by Amazon. Condition: Used: Very Good.Discussion in ' Tech-Talk ' started by rublalupMar 2, Fender Stratocaster Guitar Forum. Replacement locking tuners Discussion in ' Tech-Talk ' started by rublalupMar 2, Messages: Thanks for your help and sorry for my english. Messages: 1, I have tried a lot of locking tuners, Sperzels are by far my favourite so far. I do not qhether they will fit with no modification though. AstroMar 2, Schallers typically will fit direct.
You need to see if they're hex nut mounted or screwed in from the back. That will be telltale. Then Schallers should fit. Take a look at them before you buy them. Vintage ones will almost always require drilling. If you decide to go with those, make sure you get supplied with bushings that fit your guitar. It'll make your experience that much better. Sperzels are good.
But next I'm going to drop in a set of Grovers. These apparently should drop straight in. LowdownMar 4, Those should fit fine. I bought some vintage ones that required some drilling which had me totally nervous, but these should be ok.
Find out also if these have the pin that you'll need to drill a hole for on the back of your peghead ,just like the Sperzels do. LowdownMar 6, For what?. Well at first it was gonna be the Grovers, but now I'm leaning a bit your way to the Schallers. Next day I have off from work,I'll take one of the machineheads off and see for myself if they also have the pin. LowdownMar 7, Schaller made the OEM M6 tuners pictured above.
They should have two pinholes to prevent the tuners from moving. If you're getting hex nut locking Schallers, they should just drop in. Otherwise most vintage style tuners require a few holes for the screws to hold them in place. I have Gotohs and needed to drill holes, but then again I wanted the Kluson look and not the M6.
Age: 43 Messages: The Sperzels absolutely will not be a direct fit.Yes, absolutely, sometimes tuners are the cause of a guitar slipping out of tune. Yep, might be right. All of this is not to say that tuner upgrades are worthless.
Nothing could be further from the truth. Upgrading to a set of better-made tuners can be a fantastic investment. Upgrading to a really good set can be a wondrous pleasure, the likes of which mortals rarely experience. Oh, the accuracy… The smoothness… Oh, my…. Ah, yes. This might the time that changing tuners will help. But not necessarily because of the tuner. Locking tuners are no more or less likely to slip than another, equivalently-made tuner. The difference is in how the string attaches.
This could, therefore, help prevent your guitar falling out of tune. As an aside, I have a selfish personal view that every guitar should come with good locking tuners because good locking tuners make restringing so much faster and easier. When you string as many guitars as I do, your black and withered, repair-person heart emits a tiny whimper of joy when it encounters locking tuners. Those can still work well but they bring less joy to my shrivelled heart. Upgrade your tuners if you want.
Tune in next time for the next thrilling instalment. Thanks a lot. Check your inbox for an email for me—you'll need to confirm your subscription there.Tuning machine replacement s necessary when desiring a better quality tuner or to replace a damaged one.
With the exception of some bass tuners they are normally sold as sets, not individual tuners. Worn out tuners often have excessive play between the round and worm gear resulting in skipping or play in the tuning machine arm movement with response from the tuning machine post.
Generally speaking, if you can find retrofitting replacements for your instrument this is normally a simple procedure. When the machine head bushing has a nut and washer then it must be removed before the tuners will come out, other simply have press fit bushings when do not need to be replaced if the same design is being used. When choosing a replacement tuner that is not identical to that which you are replacing it is important to note measurements of:.
Tuning post height can vary. It is important to insure the string hole will still be accessible once the tuner and it's bushing are installed on the peghead. Be sure to check the specifications before drilling any new holes. If you are replacing your old tuners with identical tuners then you need little more than a screwdriver and nut driver, however, if the original style is not available or not desired some upgrades may require modifications.
Care should be taken to avoid chipping the finish or peghead veneer when removing pressed in machine head ferrules. When dealing with vintage instruments it is highly advisable to seek a retrofitting replacement so that no changes are made if possible. A higher ratio permits finer adjustments, reducing the aggravation of tuning up and down repeatedly before perfect tuning is achieved. Tuning machine bushings, also called ferrules, are inserted into the front side of the peghead and act as a collar for the post.
Some bushings screw to the tuner, others are pressed into the peghead and held in place by friction. When removing a press fit bushing care must be taken to avoid chipping the peghead or finish. Some of these bushings are extremely tight. Others have been glued in place in an attempt to keep them from falling out The safest method I have found to remove them is to press them out. Using a simple wood block which I have drilled to match the diameter of the bushing, it is placed over the ferrule and a dowel is used to press it up and out.
Sometimes you can do it by hand, on very tight bushings, I must use a clamp. My instrument won't stay in tune, are the tuners at fault? In general, worn out tuners make an instrument hard to tune. Loss of tuning has many causes. Read more here. The ferrules bushings that press into the fingerboard don't always fit snuggly. If one isn't careful it is quite easy to loose these when the strings are removed.
To tighten bushings that are only slightly loose without permanently gluing them into the peghead hole I shrink the diameter of the hole.During these challenging times, we guarantee we will work tirelessly to support you. Under tension, strings can whip out at you, and so could your tuners. Check for damage not only on your guitar but also on you, basically because the broken metal can act just like a knife or a wild game trap.
Once you look for any damage proceed to unwind the rest of your strings and take all of them off the tuners. Unscrew the machine heads from the neck. I don't think there is any drop in replacements that are locking. The Fender units pins dont line up with the squier's. You will have to drill new locating pin holes but once they are installed, they will completely cover the old holes.Locking Tuners Anyone Can Install On Any Guitar.

Age: 47 I replaced my Bullet tuners with Hipshot tuners and it was a labor of love installing them Age: 61 7, Thank you jefffam.
Yes i just saw also now on ebay link below showing the drawing and dimensions of a Schaller Fender vs the Generic branded tuner. Referring to the drawing the I think i would give a shot on what mtjo62 have suggested as a drop-in replacement. Of course going from traps to sealed, I had to ream it out to 10mm, but that was expected. One of the best pieces of advice I've gotten here among a lot of great advice is to get a 10mm chucking reamer rather than a tapered one.
I have both, using the taper to stat the ream, but always finishing up with the 10mm.High quality machines with ratio, sealed lubrication, adjustable knob tension, cast housings, threaded hex peghead bushings and removable metal knobs.

We highly recommend the Depth-stop Drill Bit No. Lubricate the screw threads with cutting lubricant also wax or a bar of soap to reduce friction and help them thread properly. I had compare the measurements very carefully when choosing this set because of the narrow snake-head stock.

I am enjoying using the tuners and my guitar stays in tune very well. I have an Guild Acoustic guitar that had Guild Schaller machines on it. I replaced those tuners with these gold Schaller machines and it was an almost exact replacement.
Squier Deluxe Locking Tuners
I had to slightly open up the Headstock tuner holes to accommodate the tuner shaft bushing. I did this by using a round file to ever so slightly increase the hole diameter. Schaller's are made in Germany and are very nice tuners. I have also used Waverly, Gotoh and Grover tuners. They are ALL very good tuners. Schaller fit perfectly 2.
It seems that spec on the web is different from actual size, weight and gear ratio. Size became smaller, weight lighter and gear ratio is Quality is excellent but you should re-write spec on your web. Hi Hiroshi, Thank you for sharing your honest feedback with us. We appreciate you bringing this issue to our attention. It will be corrected soon to the ratio, and smaller, lighter specs.
